The Directorate of Jute Development plans/formulates the development programme on Jute and Allied Fibre Crops in the country. After the approval of the aforesaid development programmes by the Ministry, the same is implemented by different state governments as well as by different organizations. The Directorate of Jute Development subsequently monitor the progress of implementation of the development programme on jute and allied fibre crops in the country implemented by the different state governments and different organizations. After the re-organisation of the Directorates in 1996, the Directorate has been assigned bi-focal responsibility, i.e., to look after the overall development of the Nodal Crop, i.e., jute and allied fibre crops in the country and also to monitor the other crop development programmes in the assigned states. Accordingly, the Directorate of Jute Development performs the activities on Nodal Crops i.e., jute and allied fibre crops in the country and also monitor other crop development programmes in the assigned states, namely, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, West Bengal and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
